To Speak of a Djibuk

"To Speak of a Djibuk" is an audiovisual installation directed by Farah Bouamar that explores mythological spirit figures, specifically the Djinn from Muslim traditions and the Dybbuk (Djibuk) from Jewish folklore.

Key Details About the Installation:

It was presented as part of the "ENTROPY" exhibition at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, running through late 2025. The work investigates these spirits as projections of fear, longing, and hope, existing between life and death, order and chaos. The installation is a 2025 production, supported by technical work from Sinnflut Film. The project uses voice and image fragments to explore these creatures within the framework of the "Mar'a'yeh" fellowship (a LABA Berlin program for Muslim-Jewish exchange).

What is a Dybbuk (Djibuk)?
In Jewish folklore, a dybbuk is a malicious, restless soul of a deceased person that possesses a living body to accomplish a goal or find peace. The term comes from Hebrew, meaning "to cling" or "adhere".

What is a Djinn?
While often associated with Islamic tradition, djinn (genies) are supernatural creatures that exist alongside humans, possessing free will, and can be benevolent or malevolent.
